Everyone has an agenda, well almost everyone

It’s slow and methodical, and it’s full of secrets. Blind ambition, ready to overwhelm his rivals with confusion and win through Simony. Others with a false modesty are given up when the voting starts, and others with a cutting frenzy. The twists (like the mystery) come when secrets are revealed and agendas revealed.

Excellent performances abound

The end result can be detected by the most attentive viewers who know how such narratives proceed. And they’re probably wrong. The final twist is less shocking than thoughtful and profound. Stanley Tucci feels a bit like Nigel in a tunic and miter.

Definitely worth the price

But Ralph Finnes and Isabella Rosalini really stand out. Rosalin’s cheeky speech at the end of the passionate speech is worthy of an Oscar nomination in itself. There are also incredible and surprising visuals, such as an aerial shot of 100 plus cardinals moving towards the conclave in the rain under pure white umbrellas.
